Nurses assume leadership roles in various settings, and they are accountable for redesigning and improving healthcare environments. Nurses functioning in this role have a significant impact on many aspects of healthcare, including establishing a healthy work environment, improving staff retention and engagement, maintaining sound financial responsibility, and promoting patient safety and quality-driven outcomes. The nursing profession consists of diverse individuals of various educational and experience levels spanning multiple generations. In addition, many nurses are highly skilled and educated with years of expert nursing practice, attributes which may pose additional challenges for the nurse manager. Organizational success in the current healthcare environment requires a stable, experienced, and engaged nursing workforce. Ensuring engagement and satisfaction in day-to-day work is increasingly more important for nurse executives and managers, as nurses are expected to improve clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction, integrate new technologies, and gather and interpret information as they care for their patients. This program discusses milestones and challenges in employee development, management styles, and challenges commonly faced by leaders who manage individuals that are experts in their field, and presents methods for leaders to utilize in order to successfully supervise and manage these individuals, leading to increased engagement and contributing to organizational success.
