The acuity level of patients admitted for medical treatment in U.S. hospitals is rising. To meet the needs of these patients and prevent the development of complications, healthcare professionals must recognize aberrations early and initiate prompt treatment when abnormalities are observed. Laboratory testing is one of the simplest, yet effective, forms of diagnostic testing available. Slight changes in expected values can indicate a considerably significant change in the status of the patient. The ability to confidently identify abnormal lab results, comprehend their meaning, and treat and monitor the pathological cause of the deviation i essential to providing the highest level of patient care. The goal of this course is to educate healthcare professionals in acute care settings about common laboratory results and how to interpret them.
