Learning Objectives

After completing this course, health professionals will be able to:

1. Define alcohol dependence, including the role of gender, ethnicity, and other socio-cultural factors on its prevalence.
2. Summarize the current data on the etiology of alcoholism within three prominent domains: genetic, familial, and environmental.
3. Discuss and clinically apply six evidence-based treatments for alcoholism, as well as incorporate two self-help approaches into active intervention and behavior maintenance.
4. Recognize the important integrative role allied health professionals can play in the treatment of alcoholism, including the possible use of three FDA-approved agents, three non-FDA approved (off label) agents, and five alternative/complementary therapies.
