Alcohol Dependence and Evidence-based Treatment (4 Hours)

  • Define alcohol dependence, including the role of gender, ethnicity and other sociocultural factors on its prevalence.
  • Summarize the current data on the etiology of alcoholism within 3 prominent domains: genetic, familial, environmental.
  • Discuss and clinically apply 6 evidence-based treatments for alcoholism, as well as incorporate 2 self-help approaches into active intervention and behavior maintenance.
  • Recognize the important integrative role allied health professionals can play in the treatment of alcoholism, including the possible use of 3 FDA-approved agents, 3 non-FDA approved (off label) agents, and 5 alternative/complementary therapies.

Methamphetamine Addiction Disorder (4 Hours)

  • Describe the current epidemic of methamphetamine abuse including its multi-layered impact: the health of the individual meth user, harm to unborn children, risk for family members and cost to society.
  • Identify the cluster of biopsychosocial symptoms associated with acute vs. chronic meth use, as well as distinguish these patterns from those present in cocaine use.
  • Indicate 7 efficacious psychosocial and 6 pharmacological treatments targeting methamphetamine addiction, along with clinical considerations for optimizing treatment among 4 special subpopulations.

Chronic Pain and Opioid Misuse (2 Hours)

  • Describe the relationship between Prescription Opioids(PO) and Chronic Non-Cancer Pain (CNCP).
  • Describe the importance of the further and focused study of the relationship between pain management and opioid abuse.
  • Describe the benefits and risks of opioid prescriptions
  • Understand the limits of available evidence for reducing abuse, diversion, and dependency on prescription opioids.
  • Understand the need for further high-quality research to address the public health epidemic of opioid related illness, addiction, and mortality.

Antibiotic Management (6 Hours)

  • Characterize the problem of antibiotic resistance and describe trends in antibiotic resistance among respiratory pathogens in the United States.
  • List the most common reasons for inappropriate prescribing of antibiotics by health care providers.
  • Describe how pharmacists can be involved in addressing antibiotic resistance in the community.
  • Determine the pharmacist practice activity domains in public health initiatives and responses and promotion of safe medication use in society (CAPE 3-1-D-i).
  • Identify the goals and objectives of the Get Smart: Know When Antibiotics Work program.
