Course overview

The current common misconception that Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (hEDS) and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD) are primarily joint hypermobility disorders has led to inefficient treatment in the rehab setting. Misunderstanding of the complexity of the multisystem disorders can lead to poor progression in the clinic, frustration for both the practitioner and patient, and even at times, worsening of symptoms. This course will explore the multiple systems affected in those with hEDS and HSD, how to identify those patients that may present with the diagnoses, and concepts on rehab strategies to ensure long term beneficial results. May of the common misconceptions on forced restrictions without evaluation that can feed into the fear-avoidance model will be explained and dispelled. The learner will be able to evaluate the patient as whole, understanding various systemic manifestations of the disorder and how it may affect treatment, be able to have a knowledgeable conversation with the patient about what is happening or what to be aware of in the future, and be able to recognize more severe symptoms that may require a referral out to a specialist.
