Course overview

Genetic disorders of the pulmonary system are increasingly recognized as critical contributors to respiratory emergencies encountered in the prehospital setting. With advances in diagnostics and treatment, patients with conditions such as cystic fibrosis, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, and primary ciliary dyskinesia are living longer and presenting with complex respiratory profiles across the lifespan. Emergency medical services personnel must be equipped with specialized knowledge to rapidly assess, stabilize, and manage acute complications associated with these disorders. A strong understanding of genetic pathophysiology, disease progression, and individualized patient needs enhances clinical decision-making and improves outcomes during time-sensitive interventions. This course bridges foundational science with practical EMS application, preparing providers to respond with confidence to rare but increasingly encountered respiratory conditions.
