Course overview

At the conclusion of this program, participants will: 1. Describe the difference in number of hospitalizations for patients with Alzheimer's disease or a related disorder (ADRD) versus those without ADRD; 2. Describe at least two differences in the inpatient experience of patients with ADRD vs. those without ADRD; 3. Name and describe at least two causes of potentially preventable hospitalizations; 4. Name and describe at least three inpatient complications common to patients with ADRD; 5. Describe at least two reasons for the knowledge gap across health professions regarding ADRD; 6. Describe at least two nursing interventions that may improve patient safety in the acute and post-acute care settings; 7. Provide at least two examples of validation; 8. Describe at least two benefits of validation, versus reality orientation, for the patient with ADRD; 9. Describe the prevalence of delirium for hospitalized patients with ADRD; 10. Describe at least two strategies for reducing the risk of delirium; 11. Describe how a standard measure of cognition for assessing patients in both acute and post-acute settings can improve patient safety.
