Discussion of decreasing nosocomial pressure injuries in infants, children, and adolescents, including common causes of pressure-related injuries, importance of decreasing preventable injuries, the differences between the various stages of pressure injuries, how to ensure charting compliance with device care and rotation, and common sites of pressure injuries in the pediatric population. While pressure-related injuries in the pediatric population have been less studied in comparison to adults, they still occur in this population, and may lead to increased hospital costs and length of stay, and may also predispose the patient to infection, sepsis, or treatment requiring surgery. Many pressure ulcers are preventable, which involves identification of at-risk patients, and implementing prevention strategies for those individuals. Nurses must be educated regarding how to assess and identify these patients so that appropriate interventions can be implemented if necessary. This program discusses pressure injuries in the pediatric population, including staging, causes, risk factors, assessment tools, and prevention.
