Course overview

Nursing and other healthcare professions can be a very stressful careers, which may be caused by factors such as time constraints, patient situations, conflict with co-workers, and lack of control in their work environment. Stress and burnout affect many nurses at some point in their career, and can lead to fatigue, exhaustion, detachment, decreased nursing retention, and potential patient safety concerns. Stressors in healthcare professions are even more apparent and prevalent when society as a whole is facing challenging and stressful times, such as the coronavirus pandemic. In addition to workplace stressors, nurses and other healthcare professionals are also faced with everyday stressors and challenges that also have the ability to impact their mental health and well-being. It is essential that nurses are aware of skills and techniques that they can utilize, and that they can also share with their patients, in order to effectively manage stress and build resilience during stressful or challenging times. This program discusses distress tolerance and emotion regulation skills that may be utilized by adults or adolescents during stressful and challenging times in order to better cope with the situation and build resilience.
