Discussion of conflict management, including the different types and levels of conflict, common causes, positive and negative effects of conflict, how to improve relationships in the workplace, and various strategies for conflict management. Conflict within the healthcare profession is very common and may lead to a lack of cooperation and communication amongst nurses and other co-workers, potentially having a negative impact on patient care and safety. When conflict is productively managed, it creates opportunities for critical thinking and innovation. However, when conflict is not effectively managed, negative behaviors may occur, creating further conflict within and among healthcare professions. While conflict is inevitable in any organization, poor conflict outcomes often lead to serious issues in healthcare settings, affecting not only healthcare staff but patients and family members as well.
