Renowned behaviorist Dr. Ian Dunbar discusses the importance of, and techniques for, handling and socialization of puppies and kittens to ensure that they are stress-free as adults, including during clinic visits. Puppies and kittens that have been handled by and socialized with numerous people prior to 12 weeks of age, especially neonatally, thoroughly enjoy being hugged and handled, i.e., restrained and examined, as adults. However, as adults, confident cats and dogs do not require time-consuming, stress-free, egg-shell handling techniques, or physical means of restraint.
