Course overview
The effect of tobacco use on rehabilitating from an injury or illness and maintaining general health and wellness throughout the lifespan is substantial. All healthcare professionals working with patients in rehabilitation settings (skilled nursing, home health, outpatient) are in a position to educate patients about the impact of tobacco on their recovery and reinforce the need for tobacco cessation. This course provides an overview of tobacco addiction including the prevalence, definition of addiction, physiologic and psychological effects, and chronic disease mortality. Medication treatment options and evidence-based resources available in the community for patients and providers are included.
