- Describe the most common symptoms of allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, and allergic contact dermatitis.
- Assess a patient presenting with symptoms of allergic rhinitis to distinguish allergy from common cold or underlying conditions such as asthma.
- Outline interview questions for patients to evaluate severity of symptoms and efficacy of previous tested therapies.
- Discuss available pharmacologic treatment for common symptoms of allergies including treatment goals, cautions, side effects, and administration techniques.
- List lifestyle and non-pharmacologic options that pharmacists can recommend along with ways in which their particular healthcare settings can impact therapy.
Course overview
Allergies are a common ailment affecting people of all ages and backgrounds. With various causal agents, monitoring sensitivities, evaluating their impact on quality of life, and treating them effectively can be difficult. As points of accessibility, pharmacists in the community setting must be able to assess the severity of these reactions and provide structured recommendations to provide maximal relief from symptoms while keeping patient medical histories and medication regimens up to date and in account. This course will provide an overview of the pathophysiology of hypersensitivity reactions, most common irritants, symptoms of allergic response, and pharmacologic and non-pharmacological management of these conditions.
