Course overview

Diabetes is becoming an increasingly common chronic disease in modern society (World Health Organization [WHO], 2021). Both type I and type II diabetes can lead to severe illness that requires hospitalization in a critical care unit. Nurses in the ICU should have adequate knowledge of the clinical care and management strategies required for diagnoses such as diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state (HHS). The goal of this course is to challenge learners to recognize signs and symptoms of DKA and HHS and anticipate management strategies when caring for patients with these diagnoses.
