Course overview

Disaster Response Manual for Mental Health Practitioners Course Description This course provides an overview of disaster mental health practices. Included are guidelines for delivering psychological first aid. Research conclusions are presented about the diagnoses indicated for trauma survivors. Treatment interventions for mental health professionals are discussed in depth. Learning Objectives: 1. Create an understanding of psychological first aid and the ways in which it is meant to assist children, adolescents, adults and families in the immediate aftermath of disaster. 2. Gain knowledge of current diagnoses and interventions related to disaster mental health. 3. Acquire an understanding of how disaster impacts alcohol abuse and people with severe mental illness. 4. Obtain knowledge about how to create a sense of safety and how to assess comfort, needs and concerns of survivors. 5. Learn to asses which people may be at higher risk to develop Acute Stress Disorder and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.
