Traumatic Brain Injury In Children And Adolescents - Part 1: Concussion (mTBI)

Course overview

This is possibly the most comprehensive online training program for speech-language pathologists on the types, causes and management of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) in children and adolescents. Participants will increase their knowledge base regarding the signs and symptoms of mTBI and will become more keenly aware about who is at risk for this disorder. A strong case will be made why speech-language pathologists need to be actively involved in the evaluation and treatment of children and adolescents diagnosed with mTBI, specifically, their role in identifying subtle changes in cognitive and language behavior after suspected or diagnosed concussion. The issues of subconcussions and differences in gender and concussions are discussed and the latest brain imaging technique (diffuse tensor imaging) used to visualize mTBI is explained. In addition, evaluation and management of concussion are presented, both from the medical and the speech-language pathologist's perspectives. Also, the role of the speech-language pathologist in helping children and adolescents reintegrate back into the school environment following mTBI is discussed. Finally, best practice is examined for many types of mTBI including shaken baby syndrome and sport-related concussions.
