Course overview

A hyper-responsive gag reflex can be very limiting to a child's overall well-being. It can interfere with many different aspects of life. When a speech-language pathologist is treating a child who has a hyper-responsive gag reflex, he/she needs to be aware of all of the activities and techniques that can be used and how to apply them effectively. A hyper-responsive gag reflex with food intake can negatively impact the full feeding experience and requires specific techniques for a smooth progression with oral intake. Overall, a child needs to trust his/her therapist and parent in the therapeutic process.
