Course overview

Respiratory failure is diagnosed when there is a deficit in arterial oxygen (hypoxemia) or the accumulation of carbon dioxide (hypercapnia) due to abnormalities within the respiratory system or neurological control of ventilation. It is important to identify a decline in ventilation and oxygenation early in the course of critical illness to prevent the ensuing cascade of detrimental cellular events.
