Course overview

Rapid evolution in the science and approval of drugs for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) presents a continuing challenge, particularly given the number of advances over the past few years. Genetic studies and diagnostic testing recommendations have the potential to alter therapy and increase overall survival substantially. Identification of specific mutations and targeting therapy on an individualized basis is more possible than ever. More sustained remission and more patients being referred for allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation result in significant improvements in patients' quality of life. These advances in the diagnosis and management of AML provide an opportunity to improve patient outcomes, but that is only possible if members of the laboratory team are up to date with recent and emerging diagnostic and treatment information. Pathologists, laboratory professionals, and other members of the clinical oncology team must be equipped with the most recent data and be able to effectively integrate this knowledge into daily practice. This online interactive case addresses common mutations in patients with AML, including NPM1 and FLT3-ITD mutations. The activity offers 1 CME/CMLE credits.
