This course is designed to allow learners to gain a greater understanding of lessons that have been learned during the COVID-19 pandemic and prior epidemics (eg, Ebola, SARS, MERS, and H1N1) to help them prepare for potential future pandemics. Although each major outbreak is different, there are broadly applicable lessons that the laboratory team can incorporate to better prepare for future pandemics. Video clips in this course address topics such as: - Lessons learned from COVID-19 and prior epidemics (eg, Ebola, SARS, MERS, and H1N1) - Testing considerations - Biosafety considerations - Impact on health disparities - Importance of a national testing strategy - Additional considerations for future outbreaks Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this activity, you should be able to: - Better prepare their laboratory for future pandemics as a result of lessons learned from current and previous pandemics (eg, Ebola, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus [SARS], Middle Eastern respiratory syndrome coronavirus [MERS], and H1N1) - Discuss the importance of a national testing strategy - Describe biosafety procedures that can be implemented to prevent or minimize transmission in the laboratory The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education (CME) for physicians. Credit Designation Statement The ASCP designates this enduring materials for a maximum of 1.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)TM. Physicians should claim only credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. ASCP designates this enduring materials for a maximum of 1.5 CMLE credit. This activity meets CMP and state re-licensure requirements for laboratory personnel.
