Course overview

Adolescent alcohol, tobacco and other drug (ATOD) abuse is a disorder that robs children of their potential as adults. It is important that adolescent reliminary screening and comprehensive assessment be approached as a process of obtaining increasing depth of insight into the adolescent's ATOD problems. It is vital to have a keen understanding of the impact that culture, race, and gender of both the young person and program staff can have on screening and assessment. The purpose of this course is to present strategies and accepted techniques which help detect ATOD and related problems in the adolescent's life and see that these problems are dealt with during the primary intervention. Topics covered in this course include: History of adolescent alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse; Methods of engaging the adolescent in the interview process (including sample dialogue); Helpful interview techniques; What should be included in comprehensive adolescent assessments (including case study examples); Legal issues in the screening and assessment of adolescents; Information on instruments which assess ATOD and related problems in adolescents.
