Noting that suicide is the second leading cause of death for youth in the United States, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's goal is to inform healthcare professionals, healthcare system administrators, teachers, and school administrators, parents, community members, policy makers, and other interested parties of the strategies for treating suicidal ideation, self-harm, and suicide attempts among youth. This guide discusses the prevalence of suicide among youth, effective treatment programs, implementation considerations and strategies, and examples of the successful use of programs in clinical and community-based settings.
