Why, When and What to Use for Plastic Embedding Techniques (OLC)

Course overview

Despite the satisfactory use of paraffin wax embedding for the vast majority of histological investigations, plastic embedding is useful for specific applications. However, unlike paraffin wax preparations, no single plastic or embedding procedure is suitable for all investigations, which makes selection and performing techniques much more challenging. In addition, failure to carry them out correctly can often compromise results and may lead to a false assessment or diagnosis. A common erroneous belief is that techniques for plastic embedding are limited, when there are in fact an amazing range of fascinating procedures that can be applied. This workshop aims to help the histotechnologist decide on the most appropriate procedure, whether for tinctorial staining, enzyme histochemistry, immunocytochemistry or in-situ hybridization. Particular emphasis will be on providing practical guidelines based on simplicity, reliability, turnaround time and accuracy to ensure that successful staining is achieved for either research or diagnostic investigations. Delegates are invited to discuss their own requirements and problems. It is hoped that the varied range of techniques will appeal and interest all histotechnologists as the workshop is intended for the novice and curious as well as the more experienced worker.
