Course overview

Validation of whole slide imaging (WSI) can present many challenges for institutions looking to incorporate WSI into their practice and is often cited as a barrier to implementation of digital pathology. Large institutions where pathologists view slides at multiple locations such as M Health Fairview face unique challenges that make WSI an attractive technology, but they also face increased difficulty in meeting regulatory requirements. M Health Fairview recently completed a large multi-site validation of WSI for use with immunohistochemistry (IHC). Our WSI system is now validated for use with the DAB chromogen, alkaline phosphatase red chromogen, and chromogenic in-situ hybridization at four locations. During this presentation we will share our validation experience, and use it as a framework to provide information to attendees about the CAP checklist requirements and the guidelines published by CAP for validation of WSI systems. We will also discuss in detail some of the challenges and successes from our validation and implementation experience.
