Spanish Therapeutic Communication and OT Terminology Training Program

Course overview

With the completion of the eight modules of the training program, the individual will enhance their Spanish therapeutic communication to decrease the language barrier between Spanish speaking patients and their health care provider. The modules consist of lecture video presentations along with a PowerPoint PDF to follow along. The modules highlight various domains related to therapeutic communication, specifically Spanish therapeutic communication. Domains consists of explaining Spanish culture and norms, therapeutic communication, Spanish therapeutic communication, Spanish OT terminology, and a Spanish clinical scenario. Presenters: Jamie Pomeranz and Carolina Castillo Objectives: Recognize the significance of the need for Spanish therapeutic Recognize cultural sensitivity in non-verbal communication and analyze past interactions with Spanish speaking patients if applicable Recognize the background knowledge of Spanish culture and norms Differentiate culture differences between American and Spanish culture Recognize and formulate beginner foundational terms of the Spanish language for common setting; consisting of but not limited to its alphabet, the pronunciation, numbers, etc. Recognize and formulate how to greet and introduce oneself to their patient Recognize and formulate own explanation of the role of occupational therapy to their Spanish speaking patient Formulate own version of "elevator pitch" when introducing themselves and explaining occupational therapy to their Spanish speaking patient Recognize and interpret common words and phrases used in a clinical setting; consisting of but not limited to symptoms, anatomical terms for movement, diagnosis, transfers, equipment needs, etc. This training course is well-suited for Occupational Therapist, Occupational therapy students, and other professionals with a background in rehabilitation.
