Wound Care: Neuropathic Ulcers

Course overview

Foot ulcerations are a significant complication of diabetes mellitus. Half a billion people worldwide have diabetes and one-fourth to one-third of them will develop a foot ulcer in their lifetime (Ousey et al., 2018; Armstrong et al., 2020). In 2017, the direct cost of diabetes care in the U.S. was $237 billion and one-third of that cost was associated with diabetic foot disease. Amputation in the individual with diabetes is preceded by ulceration in 80% of cases and individuals with diabetes fear amputation more than death (Ousey et al., 2018; Armstrong et al., 2020). This course discusses the prevention, assessment, and management of neuropathic ulcers.
