Course overview

"An Overview of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome" is a one-hour course designed for the novice and intermediate clinician working with patients with carpal tunnel syndrome. This course provides an in-depth overview of the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome including carpal tunnel anatomy, clinical and differential diagnosis, common signs and symptoms of CTS. Conservative and surgical treatment options are reviewed and include interventions such as splinting, tendon gliding exercises, and patient education. Conservative intervention also includes massage therapy techniques including, but not limited to lymphatic drainage, cross friction massage and deep tissue massage. Surgical treatment is covered briefly and may include an open or endoscopic release of the carpal tunnel. There is a high incidence of repetitive strain injuries and the massage therapist (MT) will commonly treat individuals with CTS. MT's. should also be aware of the signs and symptoms of CTS in order to avoid developing this common syndrome as well. Massage Therapist must be aware of various conditions in order to develop effective treatment plans for their clients.
