The lack of a clear understanding of adult bonding has hampered the effectiveness of couple therapy. Attachment theory offers the couple therapist a common sense but scientific guide to the essential nature of love, how love relationships go wrong and the most effective ways for a therapist to help a couple repair their bond. Emotionally focused couple therapy (EFT) will be outlined as a clear example of how an attachment orientation empowers the couple therapist and offers a map for effective intervention.
