Partnering with Students: Suicide Prevention, Intervention, and Postvention in the School Community

Course overview

This webinar focuses on the school social worker's role in suicide prevention in the school community. Many schools are seeing an increase in mental health struggles of students and emergency departments are seeing an influx of youth admissions related to suicidal ideation and attempts. To meet this increased urgency and need for suicide prevention we must partner up with those who often know each other best, the students. Students can see many warning signs that educators cannot given their access to social media posts and conversations with each other, thus they are in prime position to be able to save lives if they are given the tools and knowledge on how to do so. This webinar will focus on suicide presentation with an emphasis on peer trainings and how you can work with students to help them help each other and prevent suicide. In addition to discussing suicide prevention, strategies on suicide intervention, and postvention also will be shared. Learning Goals: 1. Participants will be able to describe the benefits of training students as peer supporters in recognizing the warning signs of suicide and knowing how to intervene. 2. Participants will be able to list the different formats of student suicide prevention trainings. 3. Participants will identify postvention ways to support the community.
