Domestic Violence: Protecting the Vulnerable During Crisis

Course overview

This 2-hr. course aides Board 491 licensees to screen and evaluate clients for domestic violence (DV), whether potential survivors or perpetrators, as defined by Florida statutes (CHs 456 and 741). First, we examine DV prevalence and definitions to frame initial course content. Next, after a brief review of several reliable screening/assessment tools and procedures to identify client DV history and/or currency, we turn to treatment models and services available to practitioners and their clients for developing individually-tailored, specialized services. The course concludes by instructing licensees on procedures to refer clients to appropriate services and to address initial and/or long-term therapeutic needs of those adversely affected by domestic violence. This course offers a unique focus on comparing and contrasting civilian and military populations, from use of screening and measurement tools to planning and arranging for services compatible with both Florida statues and the Code of Military Justice, given that Florida has the third largest military population (active, reserves, retired, and veteran) of any state in the U.
