Current Therapies for the Management of Diabetes

Course overview

Diabetes affects approximately 463 million people worldwide (International Diabetes Federation, 2020). The cost of treating diabetes in the U.S. in 2019 was estimated to be $760 billion. Diabetes frequently presents together with other comorbidities and can result in life-threatening complications. Over the past several decades, the number of adults diagnosed with diabetes in the U.S. has increased drastically. In 2018, 34.2 million Americans had diabetes, and this number increases by approximately 1.5 million every year (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2020). However, from 2008 to 2018, the number of new cases has significantly decreased in the U.S. as a result of efforts to halt the diabetes epidemic in this country. Unfortunately, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), rising numbers are now seen more in low to middle-income countries (WHO, 2021).
