Course overview

The Zoonoses: Protecting People and Animals in Rural Communities web-based course provides any animal health, human health, public health professional or student with an overview of zoonoses related to cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, horses and poultry. Lessons focus on key zoonotic diseases, ways to identify disease exposure risks for people and animals, and how to communicate prevention with clients, including those that may be immunocompromised. Lesson material is delivered in 3 formats: short, narrated presentations (videos), podcasts (audio only), or printable lecture transcripts (PDF). The course incorporates scenarios (e.g., case-based situations) to highlight specific zoonotic disease prevention measures, and demonstrate methods for effectively communicating risks in rural community settings. This course will help participants 1. Explain the impacts of zoonotic diseases on animal and human health in rural communities 2. Recognize the areas for increased risks for zoonoses in farm settings 3. Understand the role of veterinary personnel in zoonotic disease prevention 4.
