Course overview

Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) therapy is a treatment in which a patient breathes near 100% oxygen at a pressure above sea level (1 atmosphere absolute [ATA]) within a specially constructed hyperbaric chamber. HBO2 is currently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a primary and adjunctive treatment for a wide range of conditions. Multiple beneficial effects have been demonstrated in laboratory and animal studies: Hyperoxygenation, neovascularization, vasoconstriction, antimicrobial activity, and the prevention of inappropriate activation of leukocytes. This course will inform healthcare professionals about the availability and use of HBO2 and the implications for patients and healthcare providers.
