Mass Shootings: Applied Counseling Skills

Course overview

Mass Shootings: Applied Counseling Skills is a 3-hour online continuing education (CE) course that presents evidence-based information on the ways in which heath care professionals can offer support to communities following a mass shooting event. We will consider the initial effects of trauma following a mass shooting, including shock, disbelief, confusion, and uncertainty and explore skills to help victims, families, and the community restore a sense of safety, stability, and calm. We will then attend to the longer lasting effects on victims, including feelings of anger, grief, sadness, and survivor's guilt and discuss strategies to help develop coping mechanisms and facilitate healing. We will explore the ways in which such traumatic events cause one to ask critical questions and search for meaning. We will review skills for emphasizing self-efficacy, utilizing positive effects of gratitude, and encouraging traumatic growth to support clients. Lastly, we will look at available resources from national organizations and the government, including preparedness programs, crisis response training, and apps to help professionals and victims.
