Course overview

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2020), diabetes and chronic kidney disease are two of the leading causes of death in the U.S. Additionally, diabetes is the leading cause of chronic kidney disease. While basic tests can tell individuals if they have diabetes or kidney disease, the majority of people do not know they have these diseases. This means they go untreated until too much damage has been done to slow the disease process. Nearly 786,000 people in the U.S. are living with end stage renal disease, with 71% on dialysis and 29% with a kidney transplant (National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases [NIDDK], 2021). By understanding chronic kidney disease progression and treatment, you can help prolong and improve the lives of those in your care. This course discusses how kidney disease progresses and how to manage care of individuals with diabetes. It also discusses the importance of diet in diabetes and kidney disease.
