Course overview

According to a 2019 national survey, approximately 5.5 million Americans aged 12 years and older used cocaine in the past year. Once used in the medical field as an anesthetic, cocaine is now a schedule II substance due to its abuse potential. Cocaine is a powerful vasoconstrictor, adversely impacting the cardiac, pulmonary, renal, and neurological systems. The signs and symptoms of cocaine use and acute intoxication may overlap with those of other substances. Healthcare professionals need to be aware of the presentation of cocaine intoxication to establish early diagnosis and intervention. This educational activity will address the systemic effects of cocaine use as well as the management of cocaine intoxication.
