Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Prevention: Learning from the Past and Looking to the Future

Course overview

This course is based upon material published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, Division of Violence Prevention, and is available as an open access article. This course builds on the 2004 CDC publication Sexual Violence Prevention: Beginning the Dialogue. This foundational document helped to launch a national conversation about moving upstream to prevent violence before it occurs. The goals of Continuing the Dialogue (this current course) are to: Serve as a resource for prevention that is an update to Beginning the Dialogue. Reflect how far the field has come in terms of both embracing primary prevention and implementing strategies across the Social Ecological Model. Encourage a shift toward cross-sector and community-specific partnerships. Highlight the direction in which the prevention field is moving. This course on sexual violence and IPV prevention is designed for social workers, professional counselors, psychologists, nurses, and substance abuse counselors, who do clinical work. This course is appropriate for beginning, intermediate and advanced level practitioners who wish to develop or increase their knowledge of sexual violence and IPV prevention strategies. It may also be useful for licensed clinicians who require clinical continuing education courses for license renewal.
