MULTICULTURAL PERSPECTIVES IN WORKING WITH FAMILIES

Course overview

Explore the complexities of working with culturally diverse clients and families. In addition to providing new, evidence-based knowledge in the assessment and treatment of culturally and ethnically diverse families across the lifespan, this course offers the practitioner direct and indirect practice strategies for approaching and developing mutually respectful helping relationships and identifies ethical issues that may arise when treating multicultural families. Course Objectives: * Describe specific micro and macro approaches in assessing and working with multicultural families. * Discuss age-specific issues that affect families in selected multicultural groups, as well as appropriate treatment approaches. * Describe the issues that attend selected culturally diverse populations and identify strategies for working with each respective population. * Discuss specific challenges in working with culturally diverse families dealing with issues such as HIV/AIDS, alcoholism, incest, domestic violence, and suicide. * Identify the role of spirituality in culturally diverse families, and describe the ethical challenges that arise in the therapeutic process with multicultural families.
