Stroke remains a major neurological problem in the U.S., affecting millions of people and their families. Stroke is the fifth-leading cause of death and the primary cause of serious disability. About 795,000 people experience a new or recurrent stroke each year. The direct and indirect costs of stroke in the U.S. are estimated at $46 billion a year. This estimate includes acute care, acute rehabilitation, missed work days, and follow-up care needed to manage ongoing neurological deficits. This course provides nurses and other healthcare professionals with an understanding of stroke, its treatment, and actions to increase public awareness to prevent stroke.
