About 12% of the U.S. population will be diagnosed with some form of thyroid disorder in their lifetime, yet 60% of those with a thyroid disease go undiagnosed (American Thyroid Association [ATA], n.d.a). Thyroid disorders are life-long conditions that can be easily treated with medications, surgery, or radioactive iodine. If left untreated, thyroid disorders pose a risk to patients that can cause pregnancy complications, metabolism disruptions, physical side effects, and even death. Healthcare providers should be aware of the signs and symptoms of thyroid disorders in order to diagnose and treat the underlying condition and improve their patients quality of life.
