Course overview

There has been much discussion over the last decade surrounding the use of psychotropic medications in long-term care facilities. This has driven increased scrutiny into compliance with federal regulations and has even prompted new regulations to be developed. Understanding the risks associated with these medications and when they should and should not be used is critical to ensuring quality care in your facility and compliance with federal regulations. This course provides an overview of psychotropic medication use in the long-term care, or LTC, setting. It discusses the complexity of care in assessing and caring for the individuals, adverse effects of these medications, federal regulations governing the use of psychotropic medications, and the use of non-pharmacological strategies.
