Course overview

This research intensive course focuses on early-life Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Substance Use Disorder (SUDD). It includes: animal models of addiction, TBI and the young brain, clinical and epidemiological data on early-life TBI, preclinical studies (animal models of TBI), development and maturation of the reward pathway, TBI neuropathology and neuroinflammation in the addiction pathway, anatomical alterations following TBI in the maturing brain, induction of inflammatory markers, blood-brain barrier hyper-permeability, synaptic alterations, changes to the dopaminergic system, TBI and addiction, Clinical history of TBI and susceptibility to SUD, preclinical evidence of SUD risk following early-life TBI, the possible mechanistic role of Orexin in TBI and SUD, and confounding variables of TBI-related SUD. This course is neuroscience intensive. This research intensive course focuses on early-life Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Substance Use Disorder (SUDD).
