Course overview
In this presentation, Dr. De La Rosa will highlight some of the most notable scientific advances made in understanding the nature and extent of substance use behaviors in Latinx populations nationally and in Miami-Dade County. Data will be presented on findings from the most important, ongoing national and local epidemiologic surveys and studies that have provided information on the sociocultural risk and protective factors influencing substance use behaviors of Latinx populations. Several of the major theories underlying substance use research in Latinx populations will be discussed and analyzed, along with knowledge gaps in this research and future research orientations. Learning Objectives: At this end of the presentation, participants should: Have a good, overall understanding of some of the most important findings and ongoing research surveys and studies investigating the substance use behaviors of Latinx populations. Be able to identify some of the most important social cultural risk and protective factors influencing the substance use behaviors of Latinx populations nationally and locally. Be able to identify some of the major theories underlying research on Latinx substance use research. Be able to utilize the information presented in the background and significance sections to prepare and submit grant proposals or manuscripts that focus on Latinx substance use issues.
