Course overview

This presentation will discuss the clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment of urethritis due to Neisseria meningitidis. It will also discuss the epidemiology and genotypic/phenotypic characteristics of a urogenital pathotype of Neisseria meningitidis (the U.S. N. meninigitidis urethritis clade) that has been primarily associated with clusters of urethritis cases in men. The presentation will also summarize urogenital infections caused by Mycoplasma genitalium and review the diagnostic test methods and treatment of infections. Population health strategies to identify care gaps for M. genitalium will be discussed. Learning Objectives Describe the clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment of urethritis due to Neisseria meninigitidis. Describe the genotypic and phenotypic characteristics that may be contributing to the urogenital-tropic nature of the U.S. Neisseria meningitidis urethritis clade. Discuss the pathogenesis, transmission, and epidemiology of Mycoplasma genitalium as cause of nongonococcal urethritis and proctitis in men and cervicitis and pelvic inflammatory disease in women. Review the diagnostic test methods for, and treatment of, Mycoplasma genitalium infections.
