Course overview

Handling patient refusals can be a challenge, especially when the patient will be at a higher risk for poor outcomes. Therapists must balance respecting a patient's right to refuse while at the same time justifying a patient's need for therapy. Rehabilitation services may not be appropriate for patients who lack of motivation to participate. Additional challenges include the time, money, and productivity costs of refusal which must be considered. It is also important to know how to accept a refusal, how to document a refusal, and when to discharge a patient from caseload. This course will model best practices for therapy providers to manage patient refusals and document appropriately.
