Course overview

Across the helping professions, we have arrived at a point where it is possible to create statements of best practices in supervision that are based on available empirical research; credentialing, ethical, and legal guidelines; and consensus opinion. Best Practices in Clinical Supervision provides useful guidelines for effective, ethical, competent, and accountable supervision practice in the following areas: Initiating Supervision, Goal Setting, Giving Feedback, Conducting Supervision, The Supervisory Relationship, Diversity and Advocacy Considerations, Ethical Considerations, Documentation, Evaluation, Supervision Format, The Supervisor- Competencies and Characteristics, and Supervisor Preparation. This webinar will discuss and how participants can best incorporate these into practice. Barriers to implementing best practices will be presented as well as ideas to increase the utilization of them in both supervisions and in clinicians. The best-practice guide to clinical supervision, an approach used across psychotherapy practices. summaries the best available clinical evidence relating to clinical supervision and relates this information to key principles with a strong applied focus, drawing out practice guidelines and implications. The webinar aims to motivate mental health professionals to practice supervision with greater enthusiasm and proficiency. It is important to note that these are best practices rather than minimally acceptable practices. The best practice guidelines are intended to support supervisors in their work. They are intended to be relevant and practical, and are offered to augment the judgment of supervisors as they strive to do the following: (a) offer ethical and legal protection of the rights of supervisors, supervisees, and clients; and (b) meet the professional development needs of supervisees while protecting client welfare.
