Course overview

Part I of this training is an introduction to Trauma Informed Care. The purpose si to increase participants' knowledge and awareness of the impact of trauma on self, staff/peers, and people served in community corrections. Participants will learn to recognize types of trauma experienced by clients and staff in community corrections and identify the signs and symptoms of trauma as well as potential triggers. Participants will be able to define trauma-informed care, identify core values and practices of trauma-informed care and how they complement core correctional practices, and communicate in a trauma informed manner. Part II will cover the importance of self-care in community corrections and treatment. Five key contributing factors to the need of self-care are discussed in detail and as well as the six key focus areas of self-care. Participants will learn to recognize the symptoms associated with stress and burnout and will consider the importance of self-care to the continuing ability to meet the needs of our clients. Many techniques, coping skills, and tips for effective self-care are also shared in breakout rooms and with discussion and dialogue.
