Approximately 500,000 children are in the U.S. foster care system with approximately half of those children living in nonrelative placements. These children are among our most vulnerable, having experienced loss, neglect, and/or abuse. These statistics indicate that virtually every therapist will encounter the unique needs of these children. This 90-minute, view-on-demand, recorded webinar addresses the current state of foster care in the United States and how therapists can identify and address their unique needs including frequent school changes, inconsistent educational, and therapeutic intervention, and disruptions in bonding and social connections. Participants become aware of common challenges within the foster care system and how to become actively involved in advocating and supporting all children. At the end of this course, you will be able to (1) identify common challenges facing children in foster care, (2) list disrupted bonding cycles and how they impact growth and development, and (3) state specific rights and channels for advocating for the foster children on your caseload. This distance-learning, interactive format is offered at 0.15 CEUs, Introductory Level, OT Service Delivery, and targeted to introductory- to advanced-level OTs, COTAs, and other pediatric professionals.
