Course overview

Discussion of smoking and the efforts to quit. Topics include smoking tobacco trends and health-related issues of smoking tobacco products, the benefits of smoking cessation, medication treatment options, and behavioral/psychosocial intervention options for quitting. Smoking cigarettes is a serious public health issue in the United States, and approximately 16 million individuals live with a serious disease caused as a result of smoking. Approximately 480,000 Americans die from smoking annually, accounting for nearly one in five deaths. Smoking-related illness costs the U.S. more than $300 billion each year, and smoking will remain the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the U.S. unless measures are taken to help individuals quit smoking. The benefits of smoking cessation have grown substantially over the last few decades, and more is known now regarding the benefits of quitting than ever before. This program discusses smoking tobacco trends and health-related issues of smoking tobacco products, benefits of smoking cessation, medication treatment options for smoking cessation, and behavioral/psychosocial intervention options for smoking cessation.
