INTRAVENOUS INTERMEDIATE COURSE

Course overview

The intravenous intermediate course provides the knowledge, skills, and techniques needed to correctly insert a peripheral intravenous (IV) catheter, know the indications and contraindications for peripheral catheter placement, perform normal saline flush via a heparin lock, infuse intravenous solutions through primary and secondary IV infusion sets, identify signs of infiltration, phlebitis, or infection at the site, and properly discontinue an IV cannula. This course will provide healthcare providers licensed to perform this skill with instructions and hands-on practical application on inserting a peripheral intravenous (IV) vascular access device, hanging IV solutions, calculating IV flow rates, properly discontinuing an IV cannula, and disposing of equipment used. The focus is on preparing licensed registered nurses, advanced practice registered nurses, certified registered nurse anesthetists, midwives, and licensed practical nurses (per State Nurse Practice Act) to demonstrate sound critical thinking and clinical decision-making skills when performing IV insertion, IV infusion, and IV cannula removal.
